Late Summer Reflections: Emulating the Signs of Nature

As we move into late summer in the Chinese calendar, we enter a time associated with the Earth element, which connects with the spleen and stomach. This is the season of heat and humidity, and we’ve certainly felt it—especially in July and August!

Lately, the dry weather has had me thinking about doing a rain dance instead of watering my garden every day! Fortunately, the outer bands of Hurricane Erin brought welcome rain (and, thankfully, no destruction). With any luck, more moisture will follow, easing the drought and helping us avoid wildfires like we experienced last year.

Finding Lessons in Nature During Drought

This morning, I found myself reflecting on the parallels between nature during a drought and how we navigate hard times in life.

When the earth is dry, trees and plants instinctively send their roots deeper, searching for water. If that doesn’t work, they reach out to neighboring trees, sharing nutrients through underground networks until the rain comes.

We’re no different.

When life feels heavy, or uncertain, it helps to go inward—deeper into ourselves—to reconnect with our inner guidance. Taking time to be still, breathing intentionally, and grounding ourselves can make all the difference. You might visualize roots extending from your feet into the earth to find balance.

So often we look outside ourselves for the answer, but the answer is often within. Checking in with the parts of ourselves that may need support and finding whatever mindfulness practice works for us can usually get us through.

But if we find that’s not enough then what do we do?

We reach out. Just like trees do. To friends, family, community—or even a therapist. Sometimes we need help to make it through the day. And that’s okay. Because at the end of the day, all we have is this moment, and we do the best we can, one breath, one step at a time.

Nature reminds us that we are part of it, not separate from it. When we attune to its rhythms, we discover that we’re always supported as we flow through the seasons of life.

Living Water for Late Summer Hydration

Speaking of support—hydration is crucial during this season. I love making living water drinks. When we add herbs, fruits, or veggies to our water, it changes the water's chemistry, enhancing cellular hydration.

Here are a few of my favorites:

1. Cucumber Water

  1. Add 5 slices of peeled cucumber to a container of water.

  2. Let it sit for ~4 hours

  3. Remove the cucumber and enjoy.

2. Mint Water

  1. Make sun tea by placing a handful of fresh mint in water and letting it steep for a few hours or overnight.

  2. Strain before drinking.

3. Lemon/Lime Water

  1. Add slices of lemon or lime to your water, or squeeze the juice directly in for a zesty, hydrating boost.

Give these a try next time you’re feeling parched!

Looking Ahead

The winds of autumn are approaching. The cooler nights and crisp mornings are signs of seasonal transition. I’ll be posting more fall events soon!

In the meantime, I hope your summer has been amazing! It’s been a busy and joy-filled one for me. I look forward to seeing many of you soon at upcoming events, classes, or in the office.

Coming up in September

Fall Equinox Meditation in the Salt Cave
Saturday, September 13th | 4PM

 Check out the details below!

Celebrate the equinox representing the balance of yin and yang equal day and night. Find balance within yourself connecting with the energy of the changing of seasons. This will also not be too far away from the full harvest moon. In fact it is halfway between the full moon and the equinox.

This holistic meditation will utilize medicinal aromatherapy, crystal healing, sound healing, and qi gong. It is designed to bring a deeper connection between ourselves and mother earth. Take time for yourself to become grounded. As you bring your awareness inside, you will discover the light that shines within.

The meditation begins by applying essential oils. We will start moving into simple qigong exercises to open up energy. Then we will lie down and receive crystals for relaxation. The journey will be accompanied by sound healing instruments. The meditation will close with an inspirational passage and time for reflection.

Enjoy the changing of the seasons
