Connecting With The Mother Of Us All
A Journey Into Indigenous Wisdom with Janice Juliano
Every year, Earth Day falls on April 22nd. This is when we all are made aware of our planet and strive to find ways to care for it. For me, every day is Earth Day.
Thirty years ago I began studies with an indigenous mentor that opened up my world in a way no other teachings have. At that time in 1994, I was burnt out with my job working in child protective services, my mother had suffered a serious stroke, my grandmother (with whom I was close) had died, and a man who I had loved moved away. I was in deep grief and needed healing. I had tried traditional therapy but I felt I needed more. I needed Nature in my life.
I contacted a woman who advertised herself as “Earthways”. She did not advertise herself as a Medicine Woman or Shaman, but she definitely had much to share and was connected to all. My lessons and experiences were always on the land, at first in Connecticut and later in New Mexico.
I learned about the teachings of the Medicine Wheel – the cycles of nature, the seven directions, the energies of the sun and of the moon, the energies of beings around us, seen and unseen. In fact, books are written about the many dimensions of the Medicine Wheel.
I participated in many ceremonies honoring the Earth and Her healing as I asked for my own healing. I vision quested (where one sits in a Circle for 2-4 days and nights) with only water after having prepared many months beforehand. I did this 4 times. And yes, I had visions with no assistance from drugs of any kind.
I moved to New Mexico in 1998 and lived there until 2006.
Through the work of many years I healed and transformed – found the light within myself and found a way to change my life and my perspectives. It does not happen automatically, like over a weekend’s course, but gradually over time; through honest and sincere introspection and an open heart. With eyes to see and ears to listen.
With our intent, the Earth heals as we heal. It is a reciprocal process as we are part of the Earth. This is a truth.
Healing is so needed for everyone and for The Earth, more than ever. I have created a Medicine Wheel in the back of The Red Barn in an area surrounded by trees. After a long hiatus, I will be hosting Medicine Wheel Ceremonies for healing. We open our hearts and connect with Her.
If you are interested in participating in a Ceremony please reach out to me, Janice Juliano MSW LCSW at 860-559-6151. We can discuss preparation. This is a sincere and beautiful process where you bring your open heart and connect with yourself and Mother Earth.
